Shrinking the Footprint...

Bowlplex has a strong and genuine commitment to the environment, conducting business in an environmentally responsible manner.

We believe that corporate environmental performance is not just about being a responsible employer and stakeholder in the economy; it also makes sound business sense.

Environmental responsibility means first that our actions comply with the relevant environmental legislation. However, it also means that we strive to minimise our impact on the environment.

For example:

Initial work with the Carbon Trust achieved a reduction in energy usage across the company of 5%.

In 2007 we worked with a number of partners, including Dorset Resource Efficiency Club and Powertech Solar, to further reduce our environmental impact These have included:

  • Reviewing building management control systems to improve efficiency.
  • Investing in low energy lighting. We invested £13k changing 34% of our light bulbs across the company to low energy versions. This will save 206 tonnes of CO2 per year and reduce costs by £60K/year.

  • Energy usage figures and graphics are provided to all centres, raising awareness and improving efficiency at each site.
  • Recycling includes cardboard and glass with other materials under review.

Following the successes of 2007, we are trying to go further in 2008 to reduce the energy that we use. We are working with Southern Electrical Supplies and Lighting Solutions to further invest in low energy lighting. We are investing almost £40k and this will replace a further 35% of all our lighting. This will save a further 280 tonnes of CO2 per year.

This will mean that almost 90% of our lighting will be low energy. We aim to achieve 100% by 2009!!

Overall whilst energy unit costs are projected to increase, the environmental footprint of Bowlplex centres will continue to shrink.

Helping to make Bowlplex ?greener? is the implementation of new marketing initiatives. All promotional banners used in the centres will now only be made from recycled material, and direct mail is now only sent out via emails, saving tonnes of paper in the form of letter and offers from being sent to Bowlplex customers.

The Bowlplex grill is also doing its bit to reduce the carbon footprint, with over 70% of all food cartons and wrappers now made from recyclable material, this percentage in set to rise in future.
